Women of WiN

Dorothy Couvier

Dorothy Couvier
Title: FLM Civil Maintenance
Company: Power Workers Union

Dorothy is a Staff Officer for the Power Workers’ Union (PWU) based in Toronto. In this role she is a lead Collective Agreement negotiator for several contracts throughout Ontario, promotes health and safety in the workplace, provides advice and guidance to members and elected representatives and works towards creating and fostering positive and honest relationships both to union and management. Dorothy loves the fact that in her position she has a great deal of responsibility and independence and that she actively interacts with all electricity sectors. Her job affords her the opportunity to both learn and teach while developing positive relationships and trust. Dorothy feels that one of her most rewarding projects to date was a pay equity program which resulted in a number of women receiving significant pay and pension increases. This project also involved a resulting legal case that was won on behalf of women within her union.

Dorothy has undertaken various different types of education and training in negotiation and mediation, health benefits and holds certification in health and safety. She also conducts pension seminars throughout the province. Dorothy sits as a Director on the Electrical & Utilities Safety Association of Ontario Board.

Dorothy’s career journey has been influenced by “my union predecessor who inspired and encouraged me to pursue avenues that I did not think I could travel.”

Encouraging young women and girls to look beyond the “normal streamline for women” in terms of education and career options, is something Dorothy promotes and supports. She hopes that future doors will be open for her granddaughter to consider and pursue expanded career prospects within the nuclear industry including engineering and skilled trades.

Dorothy was inspired to get involved with WiN from working in the nuclear industry for 18 years and in the labour movement for 24 years. She believes that WiN offers women a venue to share positive messaging about the organization while promoting the nuclear industry.
