Shafi Andseta
Title: Senior Project Manager
Company: XCG Consultants Ltd.

Shafi is the Senior Environmental Project Manager at XCG Consultants Ltd. and an active member of Professional Geoscientists of Ontario.  In this role, she is responsible for managing numerous environmental projects.  Her area of expertise involves environmental site assessments (Phase I, II, III), remediation and designated substances hazardous materials survey. In addition to this work, Shafi also coordinates environmental projects of the post-graduate students in Environmental Control at Sheridan College in Brampton, Ontario.

Shafi brings an enormous amount of educational training to her position as she holds a BA in Geography and an MA in Physical Geography from the National University in Iran as well as a second MA and a Ph.D in Geology from the National University of Athens in Greece. After graduating with her Ph.D, Shafi took part in a number of projects with the Geological Survey of Greece before immigrating to Canada where she had always aspired to raise her children in order to offer them the greatest opportunities. Shortly after her immigration, Shafi began working at the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) as a co-op professional overseas. She gained a great deal of experience working with the MNR, which strengthened her interest in environmental issues. In part due to this experience, she registered for a post graduate study in Environmental Control at Sheridan College in Brampton, Ontario which she completed in 1997 and where, later she joined the teaching staff to share her knowledge and expertise.

Shafi says that she has learned that “knowledge is power. In order to be successful, one should keep themselves up to date – either through education, or by building experience. I believe that if one can envision their goal, they can attain it. If you are capable of seeing yourself as successful, you are able to be successful.” Shafi believes that the sky is the limit and that you should never stop dreaming.

While Shafi takes each project as one of a kind and learns something from each, she feels that her most rewarding projects are those that involve her research on greenhouse gas emissions and ecological footprints relating to the nuclear industry because it has been very remarkable. Shafi also really enjoys coordinating post-graduate student projects because it allows her to be a role model which gives her a large amount of personal satisfaction.

Working in the environmental field is something that Shafi takes great pride in. She believes that global warming is a serious issue and is very glad to have the opportunity to help contribute to solving this problem with her remediation projects. Her greatest influences in the work that she does are her two children.

Shafi was inspired to get involved with WiN by friends and especially by Parva Alavi of AECL. Shafi enjoys being involved with the organization for the interaction with other amazing women from diverse backgrounds and because it has helped her to understand all facets of the nuclear industry.
