Women of WiN

Kathleen Carew

Kathleen Carew
Title: Modification Team Leader
Company: OPG

Kathleen Carew is currently employed as a control room shift supervisor at Ontario Power Generation. As a control room shift supervisor, Kathleen is in charge of supervising the main control room team - a group of authorized nuclear operators. Kathleen says the most enjoyable part of her job is getting to work with some of the highest trained nuclear professionals. Thus far, her most rewarding project has been the installation and commissioning of the shutdown system enhancement (SDSE) at Pickering Nuclear Generating Station A.

Kathleen attended McMaster University in Hamilton, where she received her Bachelor of Engineering in Chemical Engineering. Kathleen also received a Masters in Business Administration, from the Schulich School of Business at York University.

Kathleen says her influence over the years stems from her “very supportive family.” The realization of the direct role she plays in reactor safety and in the safety of the public is the most satisfying aspect of Kathleen’s job. To the youth, she gives this motivational advice: “If you think you can do something, you’re right, you can! If you believe you can’t do something, you’re right, you can’t!”

Kathleen joined WiN for the opportunity to be part of an organization of professionals that have similar goals to her own. As well, she really enjoys meeting and speaking with other women in the nuclear industry.

In her spare time, Kathleen enjoys flying and travelling.
